چکیده

Responses of seed germination to temperature, water potential, time after harvest, and light were investigated for Stenocereus queretaroensis, a columnar cactus native to west central Mexico. Germination was optimal between 201C and 301C, and the germination percentage decreased as the water potential was lowered from 0?00 to 1?0 MPa. Maximal germination of 85% occurred for seeds that were 11 – 28 months old. Germination required light but became light saturated at a photosynthetic photon flux over 10 days of only 0?15 mmol m 2 s 1 (equivalent to a fluence of 67 mmol m ). Germination was apparently phytochrome mediated, as evidenced by its relative spectral sensitivity (greatest at 660 nm). The environmental requirements for breaking seed dormancy for S. queretaroensis are finely tuned to those typical of the rainy season in its native habitat.

Effect of Inoculation with Azospirillum brasilense Strains on the Germination and Seedlings Growth of the Giant Columnar Cardon Cactus (Pachycereus pringlei)

Wild Cardon cactus seeds were inoculated with Azospirillum brasilense strains Cd and Sp-245 to improve seed germination and seedling growth parameters. Differential germination responses were related to the bacterial strain. A. brasilense Cd (the type strain for the species A. brasilense) significantly decreased seed germination. A. brasilense Sp245 (a known beneficial bacteria for cereal plant...

Population Genetic Structure of a Widespread Bat-Pollinated Columnar Cactus

Bats are the main pollinators and seed dispersers of Stenocereus thurberi, a xenogamous columnar cactus of northwestern Mexico and a good model to illustrate spatial dynamics of gene flow in long-lived species. Previous studies in this cactus showed differences among populations in the type and abundance of pollinators, and in the timing of flowering and fruiting. In this study we analyzed gene...

Functional genomics of cactus host shifts in Drosophila mojavensis.

Understanding the genetic basis of adaptation to novel environments remains one of the major challenges confronting evolutionary biologists. While newly developed genomic approaches hold considerable promise for addressing this overall question, the relevant tools have not often been available in the most ecologically interesting organisms. Our study organism, Drosophila mojavensis, is a cactop...

The Role of Seed Dispersers in the Population Dynamics of the Columnar Cactus Neobuxbaumia Tetetzo

We examined the effect of frugivorous bats and birds on the population dynamics of the giant columnar cactus Neobuxbaumia tetetzo in the Tehuacán Valley, Mexico. Because successful seedling establishment occurs only beneath the canopies of shrubs and trees, we hypothesized that seed dispersal is a key process in the maintenance of its populations. We determined the dispersal effectiveness of di...

Influence of light and temperature on seed germination of Cereus pernambucensis Lemaire (Cactaceae)

The objective of the present study was to evaluate the effects of light and temperature on germination of Cereus pernambucensis seeds, a species of columnar cactus native to Brazil and naturally incident in the restinga. Cereus pernambucensis seeds were incubated under different temperatures, from 5 to 45 °C, with 5 °C intervals, and under alternating temperatures of 15-20 °C, 15-30 °C, 20-25 °...
